Scott Lee
Scott Lee Hae Seung, graduant of Danmarks Design Skole (2001) and Domus Academy (2006), is now a lecturer in the School of Design (Diploma of Industrial Design), Nanyang Polytechnic Singapore. Furniture design is his other interest as a professional. In March 2010, he displayed “Bro Chair” at the Platform exhibition (IFFS2010).

The Design Critic: Hi Scott, tell us about the “Bro Chair Ver. 1.0” and it’s manufacturing processes.
Scott Lee: I am a furniture designer who is very much into wood lamination bending, therefore, I was looking for new type of detailing to go with lamination bending. Laminated wood has beautiful authentic details, but traditional detailing has always been the common rule. I was trying to look for a well-matched detail in current visual era. So I chamfered the edge (not normally done for laminated wood) and applied a stripe of contrasting color to give it a graphical thin-edge-effect on the chair.
TDC: What does “Bro Chair” mean?
SL: The colored lines represent the chair’s status, meaning when a chair is in use, it is forms the bridge between the ground and a human being, therefore the name ‘Bro’ (bridge in Danish).

TDC: What is your design philosophy?
SL: Strive to find the balance between functionality and aesthetic, tactile materiality with design that emerges from observation of daily life reflecting the experiences and heart. The genuine idea of ‘design’ to me, is to continuously discover with comprehensive simplicity, playfulness with authentic and borderless vision.
TDC: Any last words for your students and our readers?
SL: Define the object quickly, because refinement never ends…

awesome chair scott!!
just my 2cents…
would having the edge of the chair remain as its original grain be a stronger detail? because it can further amplify the beauty of your laminated wood bending
