A Designer’s Image: Part One

Posted on July 27, 2010

We asked our readers: “Is it important for a designer to look like a designer?”

This is what they said:

“I dont think there is a LOOK for a designer.”
-Bryan Lee

“I think there is without a doubt that there is, as a generalisation, a designer look.”
-Barton Smith

“Another question again would be about homosexuality; WE like taking chances – or maybe we just want to be recognized.”
-Brian Pleidrup

“This is his (Karim Rashid) image to market to the world..what he’s wearing justifies his brand….just like MJ with his glove and hat.”
-Timme Choi

“…it is very important that your style reflect your personality and that people can understand the quality of your design identity through your appearance.”
-Dragana Ljubicic

“I think it depends if you’re designing for your own brand … (or) a big corporate, in-house design team.”
-Charles Rattray

Even among designers, the scales are in favour of neither side of the argument, and it is unlikely that the (design) world will come to a consensus, but one thing is for sure:

Putting in effort to appear more designer-like allows you to stand out from the crowd.
If that presents you with an opportunity to prove your worth, wouldn’t you take it?
